Transmission and Distribution worked on a number of key projects in 2013, one of which was the installation of 10 miles of fiber optic cable through Taunton, Berkley, Lakeville and Raynham as part of the Oshean Project's 450-mile fiber optic cyber infrastructure connecting Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Oshean (Ocean State Higher Education Economic Development and Administrative Network), a nonprofit coalition of universities, libraries, K-12s, hospitals, government agencies, and other non-profit organizations, completed the region-wide, 400 gigabit capable fiber optic network to provide advanced broadband services to its members in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.
Transmission and Distribution helped to lay the foundation for future growth of the community by installing underground electrical service to phases 4 and 5 of the Myles Standish Industrial Park expansion project. TMLP also installed LED street lights in the park as part of the LED lighting pilot program that replaces high pressure sodium bulbs with the energy efficient LED bulbs. Additional installation of LED street lights continued in the community.
TMLP added three megawatts of solar generation to TMLP's solar purchase power agreements with the addition of a solar farm in Berkley. Line crews also worked in Berkley, replacing conductors in existing feeder lines to increase capacity to customers in the area.
Line crews upgraded lines and provided preventative maintenance in several other areas within the service territory including rebuilding lines on South Main Street in Berkley. Building upon the foundation of its history of being proactive, TMLP was well equipped to handle February 2013's major blizzard, Nemo, which battered the entire area and caused all TMLP customers to lose power. Transmission and Distribution crews restored power to all customers.
TMLP continued to gather real-time information about power interruptions and outages, utilizing the website outage management tool designed to keep customers aware of where the problem areas are and when they may expect service to be restored. This is a highly reliable electric monitoring system for TMLP and customers alike.
TMLP continued to provide community support to area youth by installing sports lighting at the Norton Avenue softball field to support night games for local softball leagues.
