After several years of extensive planning, Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant performed a major inspection and overhaul of Unit 9 at Cleary Flood Station during the last quarter of 2013. This undertaking included the inspection and repair of the major components of the unit, most notably the installation of a new burner system and controls on the unit's boiler, wind box replacement, gas and steam turbine overhaul, steam turbine generator rewind, and the changeover from a residual oil system to a cleaner-burning, lower sulfur, distillate oil system. The outage effectively extended the longevity of the unit while reducing sulfur and particulate emissions, making it a significantly cleaner firing unit. An additional house boiler's firing system at the Cleary Flood Station was also switched from residual oil to natural gas and distillate oil firing, significantly reducing emissions from that unit.

The project secures the future growth of TMLP and strengthens the foundation of the utility in meeting the energy needs of the customers and energy market.

TMLP also evaluated a pilot program for cost efficiency and peak load reduction in 2013. This behind-the-fence generation program is expected to result in significant savings during peak periods.
